The Southern Ocean plays a central role in regulating the global climate and is home to
fragile, unique and exceptional biodiversity. This is why the international community,
through the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources
(CCAMLR), has decided to establish a representative system of marine protected areas (MPAs).
