Built on the principles of non-appropriation, freedom of scientific research and environmental protection, could the Antarctic Treaty System serve as a model for other Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction?
The international order has historically been structured around the gradual division of
the world into territories under the sovereignty of states. Certain areas—the high seas,
the deep seabed, the Antarctic, outer space, the Moon and other celestial bodies—do
not, however, fit into this framework.
